Gmail might be hogging the maximum number of email users worldwide, but Outlook has its own loyal takers. Outlook has had a long, eventful journey, from its inception as Hotmail in 1996, transitioning to the new avatar of Outlook in 2012 and being incorporated into Office 365 in 2017, to the latest Outlook 2019 version. Its variety of features, organized interface, flexibility, and accessibility make it one of the most popular interfaces for emailing, besides file management.
Basic or Premium
Almost every software has a free vanilla version and a paid premium version. While most average users choose the basic version of Outlook, users with brand image, like businesses, organizations, congregations, educational and medical institutions, usually upgrade to the premium version. While the premium version definitely offers lucrative features, it makes no sense to pay if you don’t need them.
What are the Extras in Premium over Basic?
Upgrading to Outlook Premium gives us the advantages of:
1. Ad-free Interface – Outlook Basic has a pane on the right that displays graphical/banner ads that Premium removes, giving users a distraction-free view. However, since the pane does not cover content, subscribe to Premium only if the aesthetic value is indispensable to your purpose from Gmail .
2. Customizable Email Addresses – Premium users get up to 5 personalized email addresses, i.e., instead of having to use outlook.com after @, one can choose their own domain name, or import an already existing one. This is mostly useful to businesses and institutions.
3. Abundant Storage – Basic package offers 15 GB email storage, while Premium users on Office 365 get up to 50 GB email storage and 1 TB OneDrive storage. Thus, high email traffic and storage needs make switching to Premium seem reasonable.
4. Easier Connectivity – Premium Outlook allows users to share personalized calendars, contacts, and documents easily between people who use your domain name, by establishing shared relationships. Although the basic version of Outlook allows such sharing too, it does not have the option of personalizing them.
5. Advanced Security – Premium Outlook has added algorithms that augment the privacy, security, and reliability of the inbox in. The inbox itself has also been revamped.
It goes without question that Premium makes the user experience more “premium”, as the name suggests. But not everyone is looking for a premium experience – they just use Outlook for basic purposes and would rather save money here. One should always be well aware of one’s sage purpose before making any decision. But, of course, a user can always upgrade to Premium or stop subscribing to it, which gives one the freedom of trying both out to see which suits them better.
